TASK:
Your class has attended a discussion on reasons for studying science at university. You have made the notes below.
Reasons for studying science at university:
- interesting and relevant
- career prospects
- importance to society
Nowadays, science is generally agreed to be a
good subject to study at university due to the fact that our current
situation requires more and more research and development either in medicine,
engineering or biology, and thus the more scientists
the more possibilities in having success.
On the one hand, it is widely believed that
scientific careers are more likely to achieve
greater rewards in monetary terms. There can be no doubt that science
graduates have higher rates of employability but this does not
always imply higher salaries, especially here in Spain where
investments in science are underfunded. Therefore, this is an important
fact to take into account before deciding to study science at university.
On the other hand, science has allowed us to
use new gadgets such as smartphones or drones, new vaccines or new synthetic
materials. All of these things make the subject of science not only interesting
for students, but also relevant for the future. Although sometimes it
could be hard to deal with all the hard specific subjects and the extreme
difficulty of the exams, any simple discovery during a scientific career is
worth all the efforts.
To sum up, it is difficult to decide whether to
study science or not at university, whereas in my opinion the position or the
salary is not as important as the results of the research or the
relevance of the discoveries that a scientist could reach during their
career.
