Essay for C1 Advanced. "Reasons for studing science at university"

 TASK:

Your class has attended a discussion on reasons for studying science at university. You have made the notes below.

Reasons for studying science at university:

  • interesting and relevant
  • career prospects
  • importance to society

Some opinions expressed in the discussion:

"These days scientist have a particularly vital role to play in society."
"Science graduates find it easier to get high-paying jobs."
"It's more fun to study subjects such as languages or te humanities."

Write an essay for your tutor discussing two of the reason in your notes. You should explain which reason you think is more important, giving reasons in support of your answer. You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as far as possible. Write your essay in 220-260 words.

ESSAY:

Nowadays, science is generally agreed to be a good subject to study at university due to the fact that our current situation requires more and more research and development either in medicine, engineering or biology, and thus the more scientists the more possibilities in having success.

On the one hand, it is widely believed that scientific careers are more likely to achieve greater rewards in monetary terms. There can be no doubt that science graduates have higher rates of employability but this does not always imply higher salaries, especially here in Spain where investments in science are underfunded. Therefore, this is an important fact to take into account before deciding to study science at university.

On the other hand, science has allowed us to use new gadgets such as smartphones or drones, new vaccines or new synthetic materials. All of these things make the subject of science not only interesting for students, but also relevant for the future. Although sometimes it could be hard to deal with all the hard specific subjects and the extreme difficulty of the exams, any simple discovery during a scientific career is worth all the efforts.

To sum up, it is difficult to decide whether to study science or not at university, whereas in my opinion the position or the salary is not as important as the results of the research or the relevance of the discoveries that a scientist could reach during their career.

Essay for C1 Advance. "Methods schools and universities use to help students find suitable jobs".

Task:

Your class has taken part in a seminar on whether the education system does enough to help young people to find jobs which fit their habilities and interests. You have made the notes below.

Methods schools and universities use to help students find suitable jobs

  • providing courses and qualifications
  • work experience programmes
  • careers advice

Some opinions expressed in the seminar:

'We study lots of things which we'll never use in any future job'
'Without work experience you'd have no idea what to study at university'
'Some of my teachers can't give me advice because they've never done any job other than teaching'

Write an essay discussing two of the methods in your notes. You should explain which method is more effective, givin reasons in support of your answer.

You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the seminar, but you should use your own words as far as possible.

Essay:

Nowadays, finding a job in which you can settle in as soon as you finish your studies is really difficult without any help at all. At this point, severa programmes are needed by the students to get assistance with their new career.
On one hand, as it was said in the seminar, young people are worried about how to choose the correct degree with no previous experience. That is what the work experience programmes try to fix providing school students with experience in the jobs they want to see if they like and therefore if they want to study for.
On the other hand, schools and universities should have teachers prepaired enough to give advice to their students about the possibilities they have once they finish their studies, and not only teachers or professors who have never done anything different than teaching. Furthermore, there must be a specific department to do monitoring of each student that could also answer any questions about future jobs.
Although both programmes are extremely important to students who have not made their choice yet, I think that the opportunity to test your future job could be more helpful than all the advice teachers could give you, because you can feel how you are going to fit in your workplace.
To sum up, all the help is not enough for young people who have to choose the correct path for their future, so in my opinion, the education system should include these programmes on order to provide society with the besto possible professionals.

Review for FCE. "School Drama Club"

The drama club at your school put on a stage musical last Saturday. Now you have been asked to write a review for the school magazine, including information about the quality of the performances, the costumes and the people in the audience, and saying whether you think the drama club should take this musical to other schools.

I really enjoyed the stage Musical which the Drama club put on last Saturday at the School. Its title was "Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar" and tells the story of two young men who went to Madrid to have their own music band.

The plot is gripping right from the start. To me, it seemed so realistic that I was involved with the main characters. Some songs were so amazingly performed that the audience was often maned to tears.

What I really loved about the musical was the costumes. There is so much work behind them although people who I talked to at the end did not appreciate it too much.

The only criticism I would make is that people in the audience were not quiet enough and this could explain the lack of attention of the actors at certain moments. Despite of that, I think it is a really good job and the club should show this musical in different theatres in the city.
